Willis O’Brien stop-motion puppets and visual effects breakdown from It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

(MGM, 1963) Three (3) Willis O’Brien stop-motion puppets used during the most memorable scene in the Stanley Kramer madcap film, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Constructed of hand-painted foam latex with wire armatures, two smaller scale measuring 2 in. tall, and one more detailed in larger scale measuring 5 ½ in. tall. These puppets were used in the final hilarious sequence when the actors are piled atop the fire truck ladder. The larger scale puppet exhibits some latex deterioration and cracking but remains in very good, stable condition. Also included is the 11-page effects breakdown, dated August 29, 1962, on Film Effects of Hollywood letterhead, bearing detailed descriptions of each shot, including number of stuntmen, if miniature animation was required, etc., with additional handwritten notations.
