Original matte painting from The Wizard of Oz

Original matte painting from The Wizard of Oz. (MGM, 1939) Vintage color matte painting accomplished in colored pencil, gouache and chalk on 28 x 22 in. black artist board. Depicting an eerie nighttime wooded patch in the rocky mountainside at the foot of the Wicked Witch’s castle in The Wizard of Oz. The image is attributable to the scene when our heroic quartet ambush the “Winkie Guards” to steal their uniforms and gain access to the castle. A central 15 x 9 in. portion of the painting has been blacked out for post-production keying in of live-action footage. With handwritten technical and scenic notes in the upper margin and the number “267” in the space for live-action. This painting was part of the MGM matte painting collection listed prior in the catalog (lots 418 – 467) which came with a coded listing from MGM Studios identifying the film’s title with corresponding number marked on the painting (267 in this case). Exhibiting minor signs of production-use. Overall in vintage, fine condition. $8,000 – $12,000
