Marilyn Monroe performance gown from Theres No Business Like Show Business

(TCF, 1954) Light blue silk gown with blue tulle trimmed skirt, heavily adorned with royal blue and clear crystal faux jewels. An internal bias label is handwritten “1-27-3-8112 A729- 47 M. Monroe”. This dress can be seen hanging on the wall in Marilyn’ sdressing room just before the final number (placed by Mitzi Gaynor), and then of course in the spectacular final scene when Marilyn (as “Vicky”)belts out the title number, “There’s No Business Like Show Business” while arm-and-arm with the five reunited Donahues. For the impressive performance costumes, of which this one is perhaps the finest example from the film, costume designers Charles Le Maire, Travilla and Miles White received an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design in 1955. (The film was also nominated for Best Music and Best Writing). An absolutely stunning performance gown from one of Marilyn’s most delightful singing numbers, which has never before been offered at public auction. The dress is missing a few of the jewels, and the bodice has faded somewhat, but overall it remains in very good condition, especially considering its age. This dress comes direct from the collection of Debbie Reynolds. Estimate $80,000 – $100,000
