John Wayne utility jacket from The Sands of Iwo Jima

(Republic, 1949) Original USMC utility jacket with “John M. Stryker” emblazoned on the back in stenciled letters, and “Wayne #6” handwritten in the collar. Worn by Wayne in his legendary role as “Sgt. Stryker”, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. The jacket is accompanied with the original program from the Hollywood premiere of the film, and numerous photographs taken on the set during filming. Of these photos, one shows Wayne with the three surviving original soldiers who raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima. Most notably, this jacket was featured on display for a number of years at the Marine Iwo Jima Veterans Reunion at the Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton, California. Comes with a letter of provenance tracing the history of this jacket from 1949 to present. A fantastic original wardrobe piece from the film, one of Wayne’s best and worn by the character who became an American icon and established Wayne as the silver-screen embodiment of the tough-as-nails U.S. soldier. Truly a wonderful piece of film history, with a superb Marine Corps association. Estimate $6,000 – $8,000
