Jason Voorhees Mothers severed head - Friday the 13th

Jason Voorhees’ Mother’s severed head from Friday the 13th. (Paramount, 1980) Realistic special effect foam head with glass eyes, as used in the scene where Jason’s mother is beheaded. To create this scene, special make-up effects artist Tom Savini first cast the full head and shoulders of Betsy Palmer (who starred as the character) in foam, then cut the head away to make the neck appear to be severed with exposed tissue, bone and spinal cord. Two blood tubes were placed inside to produce the chilling special effect of blood shooting out of the arteries. The head was attached to the neck appliance with toothpicks. In the film, the scene shows the real Mrs. Voorhees, eyes wide and mouth open to scream; this head was cast with the same express on. The false head and shoulders were then attached to Savini’s assistant, Taso Stavrakis. In this way, the false head was matched with an actual body (Taso’s) so that when the head was chopped off, real hands would come up into the frame. Even Mrs. Voorhees’ ring was placed on Taso’s finger, so that if the viewer looks closely, Mrs. Voorhees’ hands appear to have black hair! This was the only head made by Tom Savini for this disturbing scene, and this fantastic special effects prop comes with a signed letter of authenticity from Savini stating its exclusivity as used in the film. $3,000 – $5,000
