Death Star miniature movie prop surface section from Star Wars

(TCF, 1977) This miniature panel was one of the many sections used to add detailing to the Death Star trench and the surface of the special effects model by ILM effects technician Joe Johnston. According to Johnston in the Star Wars Sketchbook, “The bulk of the Death Star models were derived from six modular but very different two-foot-square miniature panels that were molded in high density foam. These pieces could be cut apart and rearranged to form endless variations of surface. The reproduction of these modules in two smaller sizes provided additional shots, seemingly from higher altitudes.” The effects department then dressed the Death Star surface with these sections, and the set piece was then used to film the X-wing and TIE fighter dogfight sequences from the climax of the film. This is one of the smaller sections used to create the higher-altitude effect. Measures approx. 3 in. x 3 in. square. Estimate $1,000 – $1,200
