Daryl Hannahs hero mermaid tail from Splash

(Disney, 1984) The memorable costume from this charming mid-1980s film, which featured the filmmaking talents of Ron Howard and Tom Hanks in their first film collaboration. The tail is fashioned from translucent urethane, then meticulously hand-airbrushed in orange with yellow highlights. Measuring just over 5 ft. long, this tail was used in a number of scenes after the pretty “Madison” is revealed as a mermaid, most notably when “Walter Kornbluth” (Eugene Levy) sprays her with a garden hose and shouts “Behold, the mermaid!” Also used for the swimming scenes, this was one of four tails created for the film, but the ONLY one used by Hannah in the production, and is featured in all of the advertising and poster artwork for the. film. Some minor tears at the hips where Hannah would shimmy into the tail; overall, this instantly-recognizable piece is in remarkably good condition considering its age and use. Comes with a letter of provenance from Academy Award-winning makeup effects artist Robert Short, who designed and custom-crafted this tail for the production. Estimate $15,000 – $20,000
