Darth Maul’s hero light saber used by Ray Park in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. (TCF, 1999) This is one of four hero Darth Maul light sabers created for use in The Phantom Menace. As the hero version of the light saber, it is the rendition that is the most detailed to look and feel as a “real” light saber would, with great attention to detail for use in the close-up shots in which the blades were not active.

The prototype version of this saber was made of metal, but was ultimately too short in length for Ray Park to use for the stunning action sequences of the film, and was abandoned. This final hero version was made by re-casting the shorter prototype metal version in resin over a 3/8 in. diameter steel rod, and given additional length by duplicating the middle sections. Large rubber o-rings (now showing some age) are placed over each section break for ornamentation and to hide the seams. The end caps are made of custom machined aluminum, while varying sizes of chrome metal plates are used to construct the ends of the emitters. All of these aluminum and chrome pieces are also mounted over the interior steel rod running through the center of the entire piece. The light saber is adorned with red and silver knurled knobs, painted cast LEDs, and silver plastic buttons with ridged sides and metallic details. The piece is fitted with a covertech clip, and includes the matching belt clip used in the film to attach the light saber to Darth Maul’s belt in the film.
This piece was first revealed on-screen in the teaser trailer for Episode I, when Darth Maul and his double-bladed light saber made a thrilling cameo, which created a sensation and fueled anticipation through to release of the film.

Also included with this light saber and belt clip is a collection of original call sheets for Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Beginning for the Ray
Park/Darth Maul scenes, which note Darth Maul’s light saber use in the scenes. The light saber is also listed under the “Props” section, showing what props were required for the day’s shooting. This Darth Maul light saber and the relevant call sheets were originally acquired from a crewmember who worked on the production. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most excit ng props from the entire Star Wars saga.
