(Disney, 1964) Three-quarter length gabardine coat of rich purple wool, fully lined in orange silk satin with white lace at the cuffs. An internal Western Costume label is handwritten “Julie Andrews 2749-1231 M.P.” As Mary Poppins would say, the coat is “practically perfect in every way” – there are a few loose threads on the top button; otherwise, the garment remains in very good condition, especially considering its age.
Worn by Julie Andrews in the charming first scenes of the film, when “Mary Poppins” makes her dramatic descent down from the clouds to the Banks’ residence and introduces herself to Mr. Banks and his astonished children. For her performance as “Mary Poppins”, Julie Andrews won the 1965 Academy Award for Best Actress. The film won four more, and was nominated for another eight, including Best Director, Best Costume Design (Color), and Best Picture. An absolutely wonderful wardrobe piece from this delightful film. Also included in this lot is Karen Dotrice’s orange wool coat worn in her role as “Jane”, with an internal WCClabel handwritten “Karen Dotrice – Jane”.
Estimate $60,000 – $80,000
