(TCF, 1963) Hand-crafted by Giuseppe Peruzzi of Casa d’Arte “Firenze,” whose labels authenticate each separate piece of this exceptional hero Roman leader ensemble for Richard Burton as Antony, consisting of ceremonial green leather halter armor over a leopard-pattern fur vest, both with elaborate metallic decorations and bullion tassels; a green silk tunic with bullion embroidery; and finished with matching green leather wrist guards. Each piece is marked for costume change “29 P E”, and all but wrist guards marked “BURTON, R”. Entire ensemble is in an extraordinary state of preservation. Worn for the extended sequence in Cleopatra of teasing, humiliation, aggression, and seduction in this notorious film which most closely illustrates the public’s perception of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s personal relationship off screen.
