(MGM, 1959)An over-dyed green cotton kaftan trimmed in gold at the neck, hem and cuffs, with an internal blank MGM label and an additional Western Costume label typed “2350-1 Charlton Heston”. Heston wore this kaftan during one of the early scenes of the film, when he invites Messala to the house for dinner and she presents a white horse to him as a gift. In return for her kindness, he is asked to spy on his people to benefit Messala’s career, which marks the end of their friendship. The gold embroidery at the collar has been removed, yet the outline of the box is still present, with additional gold adornments added to the cuffs and hem, and the tunic dyed green for a subsequent use, most likely in King of Kings. Overall, the garment remains in very good condition.
