1076. Alethiometer "Golden Compass" hero prop with opening case from The Golden Compass. (New Line, 2007) Highly detailed hero prop Alethiomether, a device which measures the truth, from the film The Golden Compass. The case is constructed entirely of brass and features a hinged lid. The entire case is intricately engraved with symbols and numeric charts, as well as Latin phrases. The interior features a clocklike enamel face surrounded by 36 symbols, an exposed mechanical movement, and four needles. The face is covered by a clear plastic lense. In the film, this Alethiometer is given to Dakota Blue Richards' character "Lyra Belacqua" by the "Master of Jordan College". To use the device, the user directs the three needles over certain symbols and forms a question in his or her mind. The fourth needle then responds to the question, swinging over different symbols to form an answer. The plastic face comes off easily and the main needle is loose, but easily repaired. Additionally, the lower brass crown is missing. A finely crafted and instantly recognizable prop from the film. $6000 - $8000
