(Universal, 2000) This tunic was worn by Russell Crowe as “Maximus” in Gladiator. The sleeveless, knee length tunic is constructed from unbleached cotton homespun fabric and lined with a light weight muslin which was hand sewn into the tunic for reinforcement. A tag with “Max” written in black ink is sewn under the muslin lining at the back of the neck, with the initials “R.C.” written in black ink on the interior muslin. Costumers hand aged and distressed the tunic with a large yellow paint mark on the chest, and red dye stains on the upper front and back of the garment. Mr. Crowe wears this tunic after he is abducted from his destroyed home by Roman slave traders and taken to Zucchabar, a Roman city in North Africa where he is bought by the trader Proximo and forced to become a gladiator. The yellow paint mark on the tunic was an identifying mark of fighting skill daubed on Maximus after Proximo tests his new batch of slaves, and the tunic is stained with the red dye as the gladiators are walked through a market on their way to a small town arena for their first battle. Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the costumer.
