(Universal, 1997) In producing the dinosaurs for all three Jurassic Park movies, the designs for each body part evolved to match the scientific community’s latest findings and beliefs. This “cat-eye” sculpture and paint job was used for the adult male Raptors. When creating the eyes, teeth and claws for each of the numerous puppets needed to portray the living animals in the film, many pieces were made with several spares to allow the absolute best to be used in the on-camera piece. This eye was made at the same time and of the same quality as the film used pieces. It was one of a few production parts that didn’t make it into a puppet. It is a custom-contoured urethane core that was hand painted and then re-run in a spherical oversized mold to create the clear exterior of the eye. It was then buffed to a highly polished luster. Measures 2 ½ in. diameter. This film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects.
