1054. Screen-used Centipede puppet from James and the Giant Peach. (Walt Disney, 1996) This screen-used Centipede puppet from James and the Giant Peachappeared in several sequences throughout the film. It has been chemically treated, and kept in the included Plexiglass case, out of bright light, to preserve the rubber. At a point in the production, some performances required one pair of arms a bit longer on a particular puppet, to extend the character's reach. This is that puppet; you can find shots in the movie that show the second pair of arms modified to be a bit longer by lengthening the wrist to stick out past the sleeves. The steel ball-and-socket armature is especially complex, as the character has a dozen arms, along with his two legs. The paint job is exactly as it was when Centipede finished his last shot; that includes the fingerprints of the animator, as there was no longer a need for the routine clean-up by the puppet fabricators. His head sports a pair of retro-reflective eyes to look more insect-like. The complex mouth armature can still change the mouth shape, but such activity will not be good for the foam rubber. The body rubber is in fair condition, with some of the skinny arms getting fragile, while the thorax is still in better condition. The twelve two-fingered hands have been recovered with new latex, and the original "street fighter" fingerless gloves remain intact. This screen-used puppet stands 15" tall.
