Amrish Puri “death robe” worn as “Mola Ram” in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. (Paramount, 1984) This “death robe” costume is essentially a long piece of red and black fabric that was wrapped and draped around Amrish Puri in his role as “Mola” during his final scenes in the film, when he is violently consumed by hungry alligators. The fabric has several tears, incurred during filming when the alligators actually bit into it; the scenes were filmed by wrapping pieces of chicken in the costumes so that the alligators would vigorously attack
them! This costume was originally acquired from the alligator wrangler
in Florida hired for this sequence, who was given this costume by the
grateful producers, Robert Watts and Frank Marshall, after the shoot. A
great costume worn by one of Indy’s arch enemies as he meets his gruesome
demise.
